MAGA conspiracists claim many Republicans implicated in Trump assassination efforts

Right-wing commentators Benny Johnson and Mike Cernovich blamed "The Deep State and Ukraine" for perpetuating two assassination attempts on Donald Trump as he campaigned in Butler County, PA, last July; and Palm Beach County, FL, in September. Johnson hosted Cernovich on his podcast and posted to X Friday, "Unravel the assassination plot against Trump, it's going to implicate many Senators and members of Congress. The Deep State and Ukraine tried to take out our President." On the podcast, Johnson asked, "What should happen if Ukraine is found to have been assisting in the assassination of Donald Trump? Even if this is a low-level military guy — and the 17-year-old that was nabbed, all we know according to the FBI is that he was communicating with a Ukrainian number, that he thought was Ukraine. We said on the show it might have been an undercover agent. Who knows?" The Secret Service counter-sniper team shot and killed Thomas Crooks after the teenager used an assault rifle to graze Trump on the ear. During his shooting spree, Crooks killed an audience member and critically injured two others. We know that for sure," Routh was caught allegedly aiming a rifle at Trump who was playing golf at his country club near West Palm Beach. Routh was arrested a short time later. Johnson continued, "Because we've seen Ryan Routh on the frontlines, holding arms in Ukraine, recruiting for Ukraine, with Ukrainian flags, fighting in bunkers. Ryan Routh had the connections — he was in Ukraine multiple times...And, so, we know, like someone in the Ukrainian military was trying to get him an RPG to blow our president out of the sky." Cernovich said the story "will obviously be buried because the implications are too much." He continued, "If you unravel the Ukraine assassination plot against Trump, that's going to implicate way too many Republican senators, way too many Republican members of Congress...But, I think by now, anybody with a brain can tell that elements of the Deep State working with Ukrainian elements of the Deep State did try to take out our president." White House's 'cute' social media post threatens to backfire in court: expert

The White House posted a screenshot of a story in The New York Times with an altered headline — and a claim that the original had been fixed. Now a former federal prosecutor is cautioning that that action could cause the Donald Trump administration problems in court. At issue is an immigrant whom the government admitted in court was wrongfully deported to El Salvador. The Maryland man, Kilmar Ábrego García, was sent to El Salvador in error, the government said. Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 9-0 that the government must "facilitate" the return of García to the U.S. However, there was another hearing in a lower court in which the judge gave her definitions of "facilitate." That was challenged in the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, which also found that Trump's administration must bring García back, as CNN reported. ALSO READ: When mafia spoof and constitutional crises collide, things stop being funnyThe White House crafted the X post, changing the headline to claim García would never return. The original headline, which referenced a meeting between Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen (MD) and García, read: "Senator Meets With Wrongly Deported Maryland Man in El Salvador." The White House changed it to read "Senator Meets with Deported MS-13 Illegal Alien in El Salvador Who's Never Coming Back."Former federal prosecutor Joyce White Vance posted on X, "I suspect this is going to show up in a variety of court pleadings. Whoever thought this was cute at the time may be less giddy when this becomes evidence of intent to disobey a court order."Multiple courts have found that García was deported without due process, and judges have insisted that the government must act to restore his rights. So far, one judge is considering contempt charges against the administration, while another has indicated that she's weighing contempt proceedings against the Trump administration, NBC News reported. CNN fact checker cuts Trump off as he launches into 'little biography' of jailed immigrant

President Donald Trump read "a little biography" of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from a slip of paper during an Oval Office meeting Monday, offering it as proof that the Maryland man was a criminal who deserved to be held in an El Salvadoran prison. Trump was speaking about Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), who traveled to the Central American country this week to check on Abrego Garcia's condition. The president then asked press secretary Karoline Leavitt to retrieve a piece of paper from another room. "If you would, Karoline, maybe go into the room and see if you can find that little slip. I wrote some things down," the president said. As Trump was handed the paper, he continued, "So, you're talking about Abrego Garcia — Is that the one? Yeah — Is an illegal alien, MS-13 gang member, and foreign terrorist," Trump said. "This comes out of the State Department and very legitimate sources. I mean, I assume — I'm reading — I'm just giving you what they handed to me. But this was supposed to be certified stuff." ALSO READ: 'Alarming': Small colleges bullied into silence as Trump poses 'existential threat' Trump continued, claiming that two judges "affirmed" Garcia was a member of the violent MS-13 gang."When Garcia was originally arrested, he was wearing a sweatshirt with rolls of money pouring out and MS-13 gang symbols," Trump read. Trump also read from Abrego Garcia's wife's domestic violence protective order. CNN cut into the press conference, with anchor Dana Bash introducing correspondent Priscilla Alvarez to "fact-check" the president. "It's a lot more complicated than that," Bash said of Trump's list. "I have reviewed the same things that I believe the president has reviewed based on how he described them," Alvarez said. "On the judges and MS-13 ties, what he's referring to, there is two rulings by immigration judges when [Abrego Garcia] was taken into custody by ICE and he had been asking for bond." Alvarez said ICE told the judges that Abrego Garcia was tied with MS-13, but "the immigration judges in both of those rulings did not conclusively find that he was part of MS-13." She continued, saying Trump "also mentioned the domestic violence petition by [Abrego Garcia's] wife in 2021. I have received a statement from his wife who says that that was a difficult time in their marriage, that no marriage is perfect and that they went to counseling after the fact." Alvarez said that domestic violence complaints are "typically not provided to the public unless shared by the victim. This was something that was blasted out by the administration." Trump team reveals lack of expertise – and patience – as it threatens to abandon Ukraine peace talks

Trump said he could stop war in 24 hours, but team appears daunted by negotiation with ‘a lot of detail attached to it’Ukraine war live updates: Trump denies being ‘played’ by PutinOne key to a successful negotiation is always being willing to walk away from the table. But it isn’t clear whether the Trump administration has threatened to give up on a Russia-Ukraine peace deal as a negotiating tactic or simply because it lacks the concentration for a complicated negotiation – a shortcoming that has dogged the administration’s foreign policy through its first three months in office.Standing on a tarmac in Paris, the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, issued a threat that the US could simply “move on” from mediating the biggest military conflict in Europe since the second world war. That would be the latest about-face for an administration that has already taken a back seat on negotiating a peace in Gaza and retreated on implementing worldwide tariffs that shook financial markets around the globe earlier this month.
